From the Midwest, originally born in Sioux Falls, SD is the artist known as Rotten Honest. Having had his roots in poetry at a young age, the artist picked up J. Dilla’s Doughnut Album at 15 and wrote a verse to almost every beat sparking the beginning interest in his hip-hop journey. At the age of 19 Rotten Honest quickly found a home in the rap group ‘James Smith’ spending the better part of his early 20’s among close friends and music.
Today you can find the artist has a slightly different perspective on life. After a failed suicide attempt left him longing for a new route, his brother gifted him a guitar which he named Handsome Hanson after his Dog. Rotten Honest credits his new tool to keeping him alive and cultivating his craft to a new sound based on his life experiences.
“Had I not gone through the trauma and things that I have, I would’ve never been pushed to the extremes needed to heal and create music” says the rapper and guitarist.
Now known for his unique open fashion and slight melancholy vibes, Rotten Honest has no problem busking on any given day and meeting new people. Through freestyling, writing, and playing guitar the young rapper has developed his own style amongst the other sub-genres of Hip-Hop. Having too many inspirations to list fully, Prince, The Weeknd, System of a Down, and especially Eyedea & Abilities were the first to come to mind – One thing is clear though, Rotten’s music has resonated a special place among the people he meets that’s sure to leave fans wanting more to come.
